Atria Story
Atria is a multi-generational, family-owned development company founded in 2000 and helmed today by Hans Jain, one of the sons of its original founder, Gyan Jain.
In 2000, Hans and his brothers envisioned a new direction. Instead of sub-dividing old manufacturing plants into smaller lease units, as their father had done, they decided to convert these spaces into live/work condominiums. They believed this approach would yield greater returns and set them on a more rewarding path, leading to the birth of Atria Development Corporation.
The I-ZONE live/work lofts, Atria’s first project, played a significant role in the revitalization of Leslieville. This industrial neighbourhood had fallen on hard times, but the project helped transform it into one of the most desirable areas for people in the arts and cultural industries to live, work, and play. Atria's involvement was a key part of this transformation, contributing to the neighbourhood's resurgence and appeal.
In 2007, Hans became the president of Atria. He established a new vision and built a strong cross-disciplinary team. This effort led to the creation of a fully vertically integrated organization, making Atria one of the most dynamic development companies in Southern Ontario.
Today, Atria remains focused on revitalizing established communities and addressing the Canadian housing crisis. In 2015, anticipating demographic and economic changes, Hans shifted the company’s focus from freehold and condominium projects to building and retaining quality rental apartment buildings for the long term.
Hans has also diversified the company’s interests by acquiring industrial development land and commercial holdings. Additionally, he created subsidiary companies to provide construction, marketing, and property management services to other developers.
Atria continues to grow under Hans’ guidance, developing new opportunities to contribute to the well-being of our communities and our country.
Atria was established in 2000, a new venture seeded by Gyan Jain, father to Hans and three other children. Not long after Gyan arrived in Canada in the 1960’s, he invested his wages from his engineering job in a home to renovate and rent out to other families. From there, he went on to build small apartment buildings and redevelop under-used, outdated manufacturing facilities. He brought along his children to job sites, and they learned the family business from the ground up. Gyan guided Atria through its first projects before turning the lead over to Hans in 2007.
